Lucas's Farewell

Over the past 2 and a half months interning at Batik Boutique, I can confidently say that I have become a more mindful global citizen.

My name is Lucas Lovejoy, and I am a student at New York University, who came to intern for Batik Boutique during my summer break.

I study finance and economics, and was originally drawn to Batik Boutique because of its unique business structure. I had not before seen an organization so intertwined with its local community: local artisans, creating modern pieces of art, using traditional techniques, all while emphasizing the beauty of batik.

I was able to learn many hands-on lessons about the process of running a business here. I gained some new hard skills while optimizing our Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software, and learned new soft skills during my time eating with colleagues.

I know some new words in Bahasa, too (my hair, according my friend Puteh, is reminiscent of kepala ayam, or a chicken’s head). I also learned how to use Photoshop and Illustrator, and also got the chance to learn to sew apparel.

When I travel back home, I plan to take what I have learned about CRM software, the Adobe creative suite, and sewing, and input that into my work and studies. I hope to continue learning about the process of running a successful business that operates in harmony with its community.

P.S. I will also be stealing this Milo Ais recipe and sharing it with my family, because who doesn't love chocolate milk?

Gillian's Farewell

Hi there. If you’ve seen our website, visited our boutique, or perhaps met us at a pop-up bazaar in the past year, you may know me. My name is Gillian. I graduated last June from Union College in New York with a Minerva Fellowship meant to instill an entrepreneurial approach to solving social issues in developing nations, and moved to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to volunteer for Batik Boutique. In my time here, I have gotten to experience a little bit of everything, and I’ve been witness to the growth of Batik Boutique.

I love the year end! It is a time of reflection on the past year and resolution for the coming year. As I take a few quiet moments to reflect, I am reminded how grateful I am for the opportunity to lead Batik Boutique. The continual hard work and growth of our artisans in their resolve to bring change to their lives and their families’ futures is impressive and inspiring.

A Trip To Kelantan

A Trip To Kelantan

Earlier this month, the whole Batik Boutique team ventured to peninsular Malaysia’s east coast to Kota Bharu, Kelantan. Much of Malaysian batik takes root there, and many of the artisans Batik Boutique partners with are based in this region. The team had the wonderful opportunity to visit three of our batik artist groups, and it was incredible to witness them in their element.
